Civil Wedding
Anyone who wishes to get married through a civil marriage ceremony is welcome to contact the municipality. A civil marriage is legally binding and does not include any religious elements. We also assist with converting registered partnerships into marriages.
Apply for a Marriage License (Hindersprövning)
You must apply for a marriage license from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). Once approved, you will receive:
- A marriage license (Intyg om hindersprövning)
- A certificate of marital status (Vigselintyg)

Converting a Registered Partnership to Marriage
Do you want to convert a registered partnership into a marriage?
According to the Swedish Marriage Code, two people, regardless of gender, have the right to marry. The term "registered partnership" has been removed, and all previously registered partnerships in Sweden are now legally recognized as marriages.
How to Convert a Partnership to a Marriage
By Written Notification
You and your partner can submit a joint written request to convert your partnership into a marriage. Send a simple letter to your nearest Swedish Tax Agency office.
Through a Marriage Ceremony
A wedding officiant can perform the ceremony without a marriage license. The only document required is a certificate of a previously registered partnership in Sweden. The officiant will notify the Swedish Tax Agency, and you will be officially married from the date of the ceremony.
